Know your rights

Know your rights

“The first step in standing up for your rights is to know your rights.”

Unifor 87-M is part of Canada’s largest private-sector union with more than 310,000 members. We have the people who can help you with any worker rights question, including hours, wages, pensions, etc.

As workers in Ontario, you are protected by laws that cover the basic terms of employment. Navigating these rules and regulations, especially if you think they aren’t being respected by your employer, can be difficult. Members of Unifor 87-M have access to knowledgeable staff and lawyers who can help navigate these problematic situations.

Specifically, the Employment Standards Act (ESA) lays out specific guidelines on:

  1. Work hours;
  2. Minimum wage and overtime pay;
  3. Public holidays;
  4. Vacation time;
  5. Pregnancy and parental leave;
  6. Emergency, medical, caregiver, leave;
  7. Termination and severance pay;
  8. Filing an employment standards claim.

You are also protected from discrimination by the Ontario Human Rights Code. Your workplace should be free from discrimination based on: race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, citizenship, ethnic origin, disability, creed, sex (including sexual harassment and pregnancy), sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, family or marital status, age. If there is a pattern of discrimination or an inappropriate incident, we can help our members file a formal complaint to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.

If you have any concerns about your rights, as a member or non-member of Unifor 87-M, send us an email or give us a call about how we can help you.
