Amazon gets patent for device that tracks workers

Amazon was awarded two patents for devices that have the ability to monitor the whereabouts of workers and track their hand movements earlier this month.

The proposed technology would work through ultrasonic devices set up in various parts of warehouses, wristbands worn by the workers and a system to oversee everything.

The wristbands would also alert workers if they grabbed the wrong item from a bin by buzzing.

Amazon says the system would make it easier for fulfillment associates to get their jobs done. However, others see the devices as a way to make the jobs of Amazon’s warehouse workers, who are expected to walk ten to 15 kilometres a day and maintaining a high quota of items picked per hour, even more robotic.
