Amazon workers disrupt Black Friday

European trade unions report that workers in Germany and Italy walked off the job on November 24, disrupting one of the busiest days of the year in the retail business.

A Verdi union spokesperson said 2,500 Amazon distribution centre workers in six cities went on strike Friday to protest low wages compared to other jobs in the retail sector.

In northern Italy, union leaders advised permanent staff to walk off the job, with an estimated 500 workers participating. Temporary workers were told to stay on the job so they wouldn’t lose out on future employment with the company.

While the Amazon workers have been holding short term strikes for years, the Italian strike would be a first for Amazon. Permanent employees in Italy have also decided to boycott overtime during the peak holiday season. The workers are looking for better wages and to negotiate bonuses with the company.
