Congratulations to this year's National Newspaper Awards nominees

Unifor Local 87-M would like to extend a big round of applause to our members who were nominated for the 68th National Newspaper Awards.

Nominees were announced March 20, with The Globe and Mail heading the pack with 19 nominations. In addition to the Globe, other newsrooms organized by 87-M that are being recognized are the Toronto Star, which got eight nominations, the Toronto Sun, which got two, and the Hamilton Spectator, The London Free Press and Metro News, which received a nomination each.

Among the Globe and Mail’s nominees were Mark MacKinnon for his work on how Bombardier does business in Russia, Marina Strauss on the rapidly changing retail sector, Doug Sanders for columns, including one on Swedish law and sexual assault, Patrick White for his reporting on the Canadian prison system and the use of solitary confinement and Kathy Tomlinson for investigations into real-estate speculation in British Columbia.

The Toronto Star has two journalists nominated for their beat reporting: Sara Mojtehedzadeh for her work on labour issues and Theresa Boyle for her health reporting. Other nominees at the Star include Amy Dempsey for her feature on how a Canadian man with mental illness ended up serving a life sentence in American prison, Jordan Himelfarb for various editorials including the death of Leonard Cohen and photographer Lucas Oleniuk for his photo of an Olympic finish line.

The Toronto Sun picked up two nominations for photojournalism, one by Stan Behal for a photo of a grieving father and another by Veronica Henri for a picture of Rob Ford’s son.

The Spec was recognized for Steve Buist’s work on immunotherapy and cancer, and the Free Press got a nod for Randy Richmond’s coverage of a man who died while under police custody.

Metro News also received its first nomination by the NNA in the breaking news category for its coverage of the Fort McMurray wildfires.

The NNAs have been around since 1949, recognizing excellence in print journalism.

The awards are open to daily newspapers, news agencies and select online news sites.

The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in Toronto on May 5.
