Journalists honoured by Time magazine
Time magazine named journalists its ‘Person of the Year’ for 2018.
Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the staff of The Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Md., Philippine journalist Maria Ressa, head of Rappler, and Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were honoured by the magazine with four different covers.
All of the journalists and organizations chosen have been targeted for their work and coverage.
Khashoggi was critical of the Saudi regime and was murdered in October by government agents.
Five Gazette staff were killed and two were injured by a gunman seeking revenge over a story the newspaper had published.
Ressa is facing tax evasion charges in the Philippeans, a move seen to be an attack on Ressa for Rappler’s critical coverage of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo are serving time in prison in Myanmar after writing a story implicating security forces in the killings of ten Muslim men.
