New Jersey Amazon warehouse workers protest wages

A group of New Jersey workers staged a demonstration outside an Amazon bookstore in New York City ahead of the holidays to let consumers know that their online purchases are made possible by low-wage warehouse workers who are often without benefits.

The group, led by a coalition of union and community organizations known as Warehouse Workers Stand Up, are asking e-commerce retailers to pledge a code of conduct for their treatment of workers.

Among their demands are paying the workers a living wage and respecting their right to organize.

"These workers are the backbone of the retail industry, and they're invisible," union organizer Megan Chambers told northjersey.com. "This is an important sector of the New Jersey economy, and it's a growing sector.”
