Unifor Local 87-M (Southern Ontario Newsmedia Guild)

We are seeking a member-organizer to organize new members in the media, entertainment, communications and information sectors. Applicants should be Unifor members who have a background in union activism and a demonstrated interest in social justice issues. They should be self-starters able to seek out potential organizing opportunities and to execute an organizing campaign under the direction of an experienced organizer.

 

Term: 12-month contract

Deadline for submitting application: Friday, December 9, 2016.

 

Key Responsibilities:

•   Identifying workplaces that could benefit from a union.

•   Reaching out to non-union workers through phone calling, leafletting, providing content to the Local’s website, overseeing advertising, and promoting the Local on social media.

•   Identifying, recruiting and developing workplace leaders.

•   Conducting individual and group meetings with workers to move organizing campaigns forward.

•   Planning and executing events to support efforts to organize workers.

Required Qualifications:   

•   Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice.

•   Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.

•   Sophisticated oral and written communication skills.

•   Computer literacy and ability to learn the organization’s technology tools. 

•   Ability to work independently as well as with a team.

•   Willingness to conduct worksite and home visits.

•   Strong planning, time-management and problem-solving skills.

•   Fluency in English. Fluency in French an asset.

•   Ability and willingness to travel within Ontario is required.

Compensation:

•   Salary and benefits will be dependent on experience and current level of compensation but will include a generous car and cell phone allowance.
