Sad day for Canadian journalism as Rogers eliminates 75 jobs

Unifor 87-M President Paul Morse says the layoffs at Rogers Communications are another bleak reminder of the crisis in journalism.

Rogers announced June 14 that it was cutting nearly a third of its digital and publication workforce, laying off 75 people.

Affected staff include those at Flare, Chatelaine, Today’s Parent, and Maclean’s Magazine, where Unifor Local 87-M represents editorial staff.

“Obviously, this is a tough situation for about a third of the unionized members at Maclean’s who have lost their jobs,” said Morse.

“Magazines and newspapers in Canada are being pounded by the loss of advertising revenue to Internet giants like Google and Facebook, and it’s shaking one of the pillars of our democracy.”
