Equity Committee
Welcome to the Unifor 87-M Equity Committee! We're a group of BIPOC journalists and allies concerned with DEI issues among our member newsrooms and the Canadian journalism industry at large. Please check out our major initiatives and reach out any time at justiceinjournalism@gmail.com. -Cliff Lee, Chair
@JustinceInJRN: Our Twitter account to join the social conversation around diversity, equity and inclusion in journalism. Check out what we have to say, including our ongoing advocacy for better diversity practices at the National Newspaper Awards.
Shared Bylines: A BIPOC scholarship and mentorship program that believes in diversifying Canada's newsrooms and ensuring they are truly representative of our country's demographics. The desire is there, but the challenge is in finding and nurturing early career journalists from diverse backgrounds.
That's where we come in: Shared Bylines finds and nurtures talented students and helps fast-track them to the front of the pipeline for internships, fellowships and entry-level positions in 87-M newsrooms and others across the country.
Over two years, we've raised $36,000 in scholarship funds for 12 students. We've provided direct mentorship to students. We've built a larger Shared Bylines community committed to extracurricular journalism workshops featuring talented friends and colleagues eager to pass on knowledge that "they don't teach you in j-school."
